Description
Omani Sumr Honey, also known as Acacia Toryilis Honey, is a unique honey variety that comes from the Acacia Toryilis blossoms found in the Al Hajar Mountains in the northern regions of Oman. This honey is known for its pure and high quality, often collected from beehives placed near the Samar tree flowers, which are native to Oman. Omani Sumr Honey is also recognized for its wonderful taste and the significant benefits it provides, which are attributed to the nectar source and the meticulous care taken by Omani beekeepers during its production.
“”And your Lord inspired to the bee, “”Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and among the trees and [in] that which they construct-
Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you].”” There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought””[16:68-69]
“”Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?”” [47:15]
Narrated Aisha (radhi Allahu anha): “”Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to love sweet edible things and honey.”” [Bukhari, 5431]
Abu al-Ahwas reported: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “You must make use of two healers: the Quran and honey.”
One of the most iconic trees of the South Arabian landscape, honey derived from Sumr trees has long been the most highly prized of all Omani honeys. Renowned for its medical potency, Sumr honey has a distinctive dark color and distinctive flavor.
Sumr honey’s herbaceous, earthy flavor is attributed to the unusually high mineral and flavonoid content of the honey. Traditionally, Sumr honey has been used especially for anemia and recovery after childbirth, as the mineral content is believed to fortify the blood.
According to lab analysis, phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Sumr honey is equivalent to the activity of New Zealand’s famous Manuka honey:
“”Phenolic content, expressed as caffeic acid equivalents, ranged from 3 to 11 mg/100 g in Acacia. Total flavonoids in 100 g Acacia (Sumr) honey were in the range of 0.45–1.01 mg CE. Also differences in phenolic content between honeys were observed marked with a mean of 89.7±64.8. OH-H which contain high proportion of acacia pollen and exhibit dark color had the highest phenolic content approaching 244.6 mg gallic acid /Kg of honey and approximately same antioxidant activity as manuka honey.”” (al-Maini, 1432)
The beehives where this honey is produced are located in Wadi al-Jizi in northern Batiniya province in Oman. The bees forage in the mountain valleys near the village of Suhaylah, in areas populated almost exclusively by Sumr trees.
