The idea for Ahya as-Sunnah started with a number of narrations from Abdullah ibn Umar al Khattab, radhi Allahu anhuma. These narrations describe how diligently Abdullah followed the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, to the point that Naafi’, a freed slave of Abdullah, said: “Had you seen how devoutly Ibn ‘Umar used to follow the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ you would have considered him insane!”
Abdullah, radhi Allahu anhu, would walk the places that the Prophet ﷺ used to walk, pray the same places he used to pray, and even go to urinate in the same place where he saw Rasulullah ﷺ urinate!
He used to water a tree where he saw Rasulullah ﷺ sitting so that it would stay alive and others would continue to sit there in its shade. These reports are recording in ath-Thahabi’s Siyar.
These narrations led us to the conclusion that there is value in anything which brings us closer to the beloved of Allah ﷺ. Even if something is not classified as a sunnah, there is great benefit in thinking about the Prophet ﷺ and seeking to live like he lived, because this is an expression of love. And the Prophet ﷺ said:
«المَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ»
“One will be with those whom he loves.”
Beyond the spiritual reward of seeking to revive lost sunnan, there are many important practical benefits to the sunnah.
Medicine has become a politicized field, where enemies of Islam colonize the minds of Muslims and sell them expensive cures that only provide temporary relief without resolving underlying problems.
Both in the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and in the accumulated wisdom of Islamic cultures, there is a great wealth of health-giving knowledge.
